My Culture

My Culture
This term in PBL, we are learning about our culture. Culture is common traditions of a group of people.
My mum is from Switzerland and my great great grandparents on my dad's side are from Ireland.

On August the 1st, is the National Day of Switzerland. People celebrate it by letting of fireworks and lighting bonfires. Lanterns called Lampion, are hung up and also people parade around the streets with them. People also gather together to share good food.
A traditional dance in Switzerland is Trachtentanz. For this dance, people wear traditional clothes called Tracht.
Traditional foods in Switzerland are melted cheeses called Raclette and Fondue.

On March the 17th, is the National Day of Ireland which is known as St Patrick's Day. People celebrate it by dressing up in green and having big parades around the city streets.

Irish Dancing is a traditional Irish dance, made famous by the River Dance Show.
Some traditional foods in Ireland are Irish Stew, Soda Bread and Guinness. Whiskey is also made in Ireland.
Ireland is famous for it's poetry like Limericks which originated in a Irish city called Limerick.

What is your culture? Please tell me in the comments!

  4. Hi Gianna,
No, I have never been to Switzerland or Ireland but I really hope that I can go there one day. The only Irish poetry that I know is Limericks but I am sure that there are other types of Irish poetry.

  7. I really enjoyed reading your culture post Natalie. It is interesting to find out more about those connected to us. My dad’s family are from Dunback, which is a very small town in the Otago region of New Zealand with a population of about 200 people. My great grandad on my mum’s side is from Sydney and he was involved in establishing a park for a league club. I enjoy limericks Natalie...do you have a favourite limerick?
